Study about peer support for LGBTQ+ forced migrants

Study about peer support for LGBTQ+ forced migrants

Co-created peer support for forced migrants identifying as LGBTQ+: Development of an intervention and exploration of acceptability and usability

Information for research participants

We would like to ask whether you want to participate in a research project. In this document you will receive information about the project and what participation involves.

What is this project and why are you asking me to participate?

Forced migrants who identify as LGBTQ+ face various challenges when living in Sweden. This situation includes, among other things, a risk of loneliness and mental ill-health. In this research project, researchers are collaborating with forced migrants who identify as LGBTQ+.

The aim is to create a peer support programme for forced migrants who identify as LGBTQ+. We want to learn more about how peer support can best be designed so that it matches the needs and preferences of the target group. Those who know this best are people who have personal experience of coming to Sweden as forced migrants and as LGBTQ+ individuals. We want to learn more about why peer support is needed, what it should include, who should lead the groups, how and where it should be offered, how often it should be offered, and whether it needs to be adapted in any way.

We are looking for you who are a forced migrant and who identify as LGBTQ+.

The research principal for the project is the Swedish Red Cross University. The research principal is the organisation responsible for the project. The research has been approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority; the approval number is 2024-06364-01 and 2026-03253-02.

Questions and answers about the project

How does the project work?

We are inviting you to participate in an interview and, at the end of the interview, answer written questions. During the interview, we will describe a planned peer support programme. We want to know how we can improve it so that it meets the needs of forced migrants who identify as LGBTQ+. We want to hear your perspectives on what we have planned. You do not need any special education to participate. For us, your perspectives and advice are the most important thing, so that we can make the right decisions when planning the peer support programme. You are not expected to share your own personal experiences.

The interview will take place either at a location you choose or by phone/video. We will decide this together with you. The interview will take about one to two hours, depending on how much you wish to talk. With your consent, we will record the interview as an audio file. The recording will then be transcribed and analysed at a group level. You will be interviewed individually by people working on the project. To participate in the study, you must be 18 years or older.

The interviewers are researchers and research assistants in the project. We have different backgrounds and identities, and queer identities are represented among us. We are very interested in hearing about your experiences, and our goal is to understand how support can be improved.

Possible effects and risks of participating in the project

Participation in the project is not considered to involve any risks. If you experience discomfort or need psychological support after the interview, we can help you get in contact with healthcare services. If this happens, please speak with the interviewer or contact the principal investigator for the study (see below).

What happens to your data?

We do not ask for any identifiable personal information during the interview. A code list with a number for the interview will be stored in a fireproof locked cabinet, accessible only to those working on the project. Your responses will be analysed at group level, and the results will be published as articles in scientific journals. No individual person will be identifiable. Data will be stored securely for 10 years in locked fireproof cabinets at the Department of Health Sciences, the Swedish Red Cross University, as well as in encrypted digital storage. All collected material will be handled confidentially.

Your responses will be processed so that unauthorised persons cannot access them. The data controller for your personal data is the Swedish Red Cross University. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to receive free access to the data about you that is processed in the project, and to have any errors corrected if necessary. You may also request deletion of your data and restriction of processing of your personal data. However, the right to erasure and restriction does not apply when the data is necessary for the current research.

If you wish to access the data, please contact Tommy Carlsson (email: tommy.carlsson@rkh.se, phone: +46 8 587 516 21). The Data Protection Officer can be reached at dataskydd@rkh.se. If you are dissatisfied with how your personal data is processed, you have the right to submit a complaint to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten), which is the supervisory authority.

How will you receive information about the results?

The results will be published in scientific articles. They may also be published in books, articles, or opinion pieces in the press. If you wish to access your individual data or the results of the study, you can contact the principal investigator. In the case of unforeseen findings, these may be reported in scientific articles.

Insurance and compensation

No insurance applies, as you are only participating in an interview. Participants will receive a gift card worth 500 SEK via GoGift. This compensation is not taxable. No compensation for lost income will be provided.

Participation is voluntary

Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time. If you choose not to participate or wish to withdraw, you do not need to give a reason.

If you wish to withdraw, you should contact the person responsible for the project (see below). To conduct the interview, we need your contact details, and you will sign a consent form that we will send to you. As a participant, you are not part of any care or treatment. If you wish to withdraw, it is recommended that you contact someone responsible for the project.
