About me

I became a nurse in 1987 and an intensive care nurse in 1990. I have worked in intensive care since I graduated as a nurse, mainly in neonatal and paediatric intensive care. I started working as a lecturer at Karolinska Institutet in 2000 and graduated with a doctorate in medicine in 2008. Eight years later, in 2016, I was appointed associate professor in nursing. Today I work as a professor at the Swedish Red Cross University, where I am the Chairperson of the Committee for Education and Research.

Research profile

My research covers several areas such as higher education and research in cultural competence. I collaborate with nurses, doctors, psychologists, and educators in various research projects. Research projects in higher education include assessment instruments for assessing students objectively and on an equal basis, which is important from a student perspective. Another research project concerns how ambulance personnel can work safely and effectively when there is a disaster event by training with the help of virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

In the area of cultural competence, I have studied cultural competence among nurses as well as studied parents’ experiences of cultural competence among nurses in paediatric care. I am currently collaborating in two research projects in the field of cultural competence. The first project concerns cultural competence among nurses in paediatric care, while the second concerns the development of a culturally adapted teaching model about self-care, for migrants diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Finally, I study parents' experiences short and long term, when having a child who needed to be treated with hypothermia treatment after birth.
