At the moment we are collaborating with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUCo) in Moshi, Tanzania, in a project that involves both teachers and students.
The project allows students from both institutions to visit the partner institution for 10 weeks to conduct field studies and write their bachelor's theses in nursing together with a local student. In 2018, four Swedish students went to KCMUCo to write together with four local students in pairs, and four Tanzanian students visited the Swedish Red Cross University to pair up with four local students here. The teachers involved in this project (two from KCMUCo and two from the Swedish Red Cross University) mentored the student pairs throughout their field studies and thesis writing, resulting in excellent work, as well as a deeper understanding for nursing within different socio-economic and cultural contexts and the notion of collaborating across borders.
Incoming teachers within Linnaeus-Palme (KCMUCo-Swedish Red Cross University)
Teachers visiting the Swedish Red Cross University through the participation in the Linnaeus-Palme project do not only mentor the students from their home university, but spend 3 weeks in the Swedish Red Cross University with the purpose of tutoring the student pairs at the Swedish Red Cross University in person, gaining a closer collaboration with the Swedish mentors as well as broadening their own intercultural and contextual understanding. The programme grants cover accommodation, flight tickets, local transportation and daily expenses during the stay in Stockholm and a personal schedule is elaborated in order to ensure maximum profit of their time here. The teachers should engage in at least 10 hours of lecturing apart from the tutoring hours, including a brief presentation of their institution.
Teacher report
The Swedish Council for Higher Education, the financer of the Linnaeus-Palme programme, annually requires a report of the activities within the exchange programme. Each teacher participating in this programme therefore needs to write a report to the Swedish Red Cross University, evaluating the knowledge and experiences gained from the teacher exchange.
The teacher report should include:

Description of the teacher’s own teaching during the exchange period.

Description of how the experiences of the teacher exchange can benefit the nursing education at the home university.

Description of how the result of the exchange period will be forwarded to and shared with others at the home university, both students and faculty.

Statements if and in that case how the teacher exchange has led to a wider understanding of the subject area for the participating teacher.

Evaluation of the social context of the exchange period such as integration with the faculty, social activities etc.

Suggestions on improvements that could be made to further increase the academic benefits of the teacher exchange programme.
Travel arrangements Linnaeus-Palme
Flight tickets and getting here
Visiting teachers and staff within Linnaeus-Palme are granted tickets through the stipend programme. SCRUC will arrange with the booking of your flight as well as your invitation letter (if needed for your visa application, see below). The e-flight ticket and invitation letter will be e-mailed to you once the bookings are made.
Upon your arrival a taxi will be waiting for you at the airport and take you to your accommodation. You will receive the booking reference and name of the taxi company by e-mail before arrival. On your first day at the Swedish Red Cross University you will be welcomed by representatives from our staff. Visa
Individuals that are not from an EU/EEA country must apply for a visa at a Swedish embassy or consulate in their home country prior to departure. The processing time may be long and it is therefore important to apply for the visa as soon as you know that you will be coming to the Swedish Red Cross University.
Practical information Linnaeus-Palme
The Swedish Red Cross University is located in Flemingsberg, a southern suburb of Stockholm, in Huddinge Municipality. The nearest commuter train station is Flemingsberg.
Stockholm has an extensive public transport system and you can find more information about it at the SL homepage. As a guest within the Linnaeus-Palme programme, an unlimited SL Access card will be provided to you upon arrival.
The public transport system consists of the subway (see map), commuter trains (SE: ‘pendeltåg’), local trains (for example ‘Tvärbanan’, ‘Roslagsbanan’, ‘Nockebybanan’), a tram (from Sergels Torg/T-Centralen to Djurgården, via Kungsträdgården, the National Museum, the Wasa Museum and Skansen), and ferries (Slussen to Skeppsholmen and Djurgården).
The currency used in Sweden is Swedish krona. In Sweden, cash is rarely used and many stores are 'cash free'. All services, such as taxis, entrance fees for museums etc., can be paid with cards. Through the Linnaeus-Palme programme you will receive a per diem that should cover your living costs during your exchange period here. If possible, we strongly recommend you to bring a debit/credit card to which you will get your grant transfered upon arrival. Please bring your international bank account number (IBAN and SWIFT codes) to facilitate the process of paying your grant.
If you should not have the possibility to issue a card prior to your travel you will receive your grant in cash upon your arrival to the Swedish Red Cross University.
As a Linnaeus-Palme participant, you will be provided with a mobile phone during your stay here. If you wish to use your own phone we will provide you with a Swedish SIM-card.
On the first day of your stay at the university you will be provided a username and password in order to access the network. As a Linneaus-Palme participant you will also be provided a place to work, in a shared offce, during your stay at the university. The room is equipped with a lap top if needed. On the laptop you can access internet. Printers and photo copy machines are available.
There is no university canteen at the Swedish Red Cross University but there are various cafes and food courts around the the Swedish Red Cross University area. You might find that eating out is rather expensive, and it is very common for staff and students to bring their own homemade food to the university. In the faculty and staff room there are fridges and microwaves available if you wish to bring your own food. If you would like some lunch company, the common lunch time is between 12 and 1 pm.
The Swedish Red Cross University is affiliated with the Södertörn University Library, located at the same campus.
The official language in Sweden is Swedish and this is also the common language within higher education. However, an increasing number of programmes and courses at universities are given in English. At the Swedish Red Cross University a number of courses are run in English.
In general the knowledge of English in Sweden is good and you should not face any trouble communicating during your stay here.
