What are the specificities of a nurse with a global vision and global perspectives? A new study shows how the Swedish Red Cross University’s unique global profile, as associated to the international Red Cross and Red Crescent’s movement, is part of its nursing education.

Comprehensive theoretical framework

“The overall purpose of this study has been to initiate the process to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework that links the three entities defining the Swedish Red Cross University: global nursing, global health and Red Cross and Red Crescent’s perspective (RCRC), explains Stéphanie Paillard Borg, associate professor and senior lecturer at the Swedish Red Cross University, and main author of the study.

In the study, an analysis of nursing bachelor’s theses over two periods (2011–2012 and 2015–2016) was conducted to capture the academic essence with the aim of describing how global nursing and global health were presented in relation to the Red Cross and Red Crescent perspectives and how it was treated. The goal was to

  • Describe how global nursing and global health, in conjunction with the RCRC perspective, were addressed and contextualized in nursing bachelor’s theses; and
  • Investigate how students’ knowledge in global awareness and vision has developed over time and was contextualized in nursing degree projects and to examine how students' knowledge of global awareness and vision has developed over time.

Preparing future nurses to work in health and medical care on a global level

“The study shows that by promoting relevant knowledge, the Swedish Red Cross University prepares future nurses to work in health and medical care on a global level. Students are prepared through a knowledge increase in caring relations, a transfer toward global awareness and an understanding in nursing ethics in complex nursing practices”, Stéphanie Paillard Borg and Mia Kraft conclude.

The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) guidelines were used to ensure the credibility of the results.
